Ben is a special little dog who needs a very patient human who will give him the time he requires to learn to trust. He is a loving little guy once he gives his heart away. His early months in an overcrowded hoarding situation where he did not get the normal attention needed to learn to have faith in humans makes him very wary. Given time, however, he will give his devotion to the right human and offer years of joy.
Now, down to the fine print: Ben will always be an escape risk in new situations or when frightened. This is not reflective of a lack of affection on Ben's part, but instead is a behavior often noted in dogs that have come from hoarding situations. His family will have to be prepared to keep him safe, and not take this behavior personally. That translates into choosing a secure harness for him, and never leaving him unsupervised outdoors, even in an unfenced yard. He is also not for someone looking for a travel buddy. He should be boarded or have a sitter rather than hit the open roads. "But, why even after I know Ben loves me?" you may ask. Because, new situations are like starting all over for Ben. Ever see that movie, "50 First Dates?" New situations like road trips and unfamiliar places are like a whole new day for Ben with no memory of how brave he is and how safe his home is.
Yes, it is a little sad, but Ben deserves to be happy and loved and to love. His siblings have been adopted and reports are that they continue to blossom.
Ben is neutered, current on vaccinations, anc microchipped. He is current on flea preventative and heartworm preventative.
Our adoptions include a foster period of 4-6 weeks so that you can be sure that this pet is a good fit without any pressure, and we are available to answer any behavior or training questions during that time (and beyond, if you wish).
Local adoptions preferred (within Greater New Orleans area and surrounding parishes). We do not ship animals, as a part of our adoption process is for the potential adopter(s) to meet the dog to assess if he/she is a match for the family.
