Due to the significant lack of homes locally for animals in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Pet Adoption Services is waving its usual policy regarding out-of-state adoptions effective July 2006 and until further notice.
A few things to note:
- The adopter will be responsible for arranging SAFE transport of the adopted pet.
- We prefer that adopters transport their pets by car or plane (with an escort). If you will be arranging for transport
of your pet by plane without an escort, you will be responsible for arranging the pet's transport to the airport and securing the proper kennel, etc.
- Because cats and kittens are more sensitive to lengthy travel times, someone must escort an adopted cat or
kitten by plane so that it may travel with the adopter or escort and is not placed in cargo. In other words, cats and kittens will not be shipped un-escorted.
- Airlines require a health certificate for pets being shipped. The adopter will be responsible for the fees incurred
for this. The average fee is $10 - $15 per pet and will be added to the adoption fee.
- Please note in the "comments" field of your application how you plan to transport the pet once approved for
adoption.
- PAS reserves the right to refuse an out-of-state adoption for any animal it deems not able to travel for an
extended period of time. As always, the safety of our rescues is our first priority.
Thank you for considering a rescued pet, especially those rescued along the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. While we are on our way to recovery and are seeing great improvements everyday, the local pet population has suffered greatly due to the affect on local rescues and their ability to keep up with the population explosion following these disasters. Also, because many residents are living in temporary housing or apartments as they rebuild their homes, there is currently a lack of appropriate homes for our local pets. On behalf of the residents of the Gulf Coast, we thank you for your support and generosity.
