Holiday gift wrap helps raise money
Sunday, January 24, 2010
Ann Nungesser

Pet rescue and adoption organizations are always looking for ways to raise money to support the animals in their care. Among those wrapping gifts for donations at local bookstores during the recent holiday shopping season were supporters of Pet Adoption Services and the Riverlands SPCA.

In addition to raising money, the volunteers bring their animal welfare groups to the attention of the public. That can be especially important for smaller, lesser-known rescue groups with no shelter facility.

The adoptable pets rescued by PAS and the Riverlands SPCA are fostered in the homes of volunteers until they are adopted. Such organizations are sometimes overlooked as sources by people wanting to adopt a rescued pet. The awareness created from public events may result in more pet adoptions as well as new volunteers or supporters.

During its 13-year existence, PAS has been run and supported solely by unpaid, volunteer members. The group prides itself on matching pets to "just the right permanent home" thanks to its experienced foster parents. Occasionally adoption fees are waived for PAS adopters over 65 years old who adopt a mature cat via the "Feline Companions for Seniors" program.

To ensure its pets go to committed homes, the PAS screening process includes a vet reference check and home visit. Interested individuals can support PAS by becoming a card-carrying member. The $20 annual dues are a direct donation to the care and feeding of rescued animals. Members receive a quarterly newsletter.

PAS always has a need for volunteers to help with pet adoption days, animal transport and grooming, as well as fostering pets. For more information or to see a list of current adoptable pets from PAS, visit www.petadaoptionservices.org. The PAS mailing address is P.O. Box 534, Kenner, LA 70063

PAS adoption days are held at Petsmart, 6852 Veterans Memorial Highway, Metairie, usually on the first Saturday of the month, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, due to Carnival season, the next event has been pushed to the second Saturday of the month and is scheduled for Feb. 13.
