Early May 2006
Christy was rescued as a starvation and neglect case. This baby (she is about 18 months old) is the absolute
sweetest girl you ever want to meet. Christy is love at first sight! She is such a trooper and great mom. She
was nursing her 12 week old puppies even though she is skin and bones! Christy did have an owner, but she was
being allowed to roam free near a major highway and was nursing 4 puppies when she was reported to PAS. Her
owner released her and here puppies to PAS and she was provided medical care. Christy was found to be
strongly heartworm positive. In addition, she was infested with intestinal parasites and does have some
anemia from this. She will be in foster care for a minimum of 1-2 months so that she can gain weight before
heartworm treatment and her spay can even be attempted. Christy would normally have been euthanized, since
she wouldn't be expected to survive her heartworm treatment and her extended stay in foster care will
require more funding than usual. But, her heart and lungs are strong, and she is in good spirits. So, with our
vet's blessing, we have made the decision to put her through treatment.
Christy will receive full medical care, including spay and vaccinations, before she is placed for adoption. Donations in
any amount to defray the cost of her care are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible!
Updates:
May 13, 2006 - Many thanks to the generosity of several business and individuals who wish to remain anonymous! Christy's extended stay in
fostercare should be fully funded, as well as her heartworm treatment, barring any unforeseen medical issues. This is great news in light of limited
fundraising prospects in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
June 3, 2006 - Christy is steadily gaining weight, although it took a while to get her to start eating a healthy amount of food. To anyone that sees
her and does not know her case, they can still observe that she is a neglect case.  Christy's spirits are still good. All but one of her puppies, Jenny,
has been adopted.
Mid June 2006 - Christy's underweight is less critical. She is getting along great with her dog siblings in her foster home.
July 1, 2006 - Christy is progressing well. She went to our monthly adoption day at Petsmart on Veterans Blvd in Metairie. She is a real
sweetheart and greeted visitors with affection. There were a few people who inquired about adopting Christy, but no takers, yet. Jenny, her only
unadopted puppy is still looking for a home. Unfortunately, Christy and Jenny are black Lab mixes, statistically the last to be adopted and thus,
euthanized in shelters everyday.  Don't worry Christy and Jenny, we will keep looking for your forever home!
July 24, 2006 - Christy has gained enough weight to safely undergo her spay surgery!  She will start heartworm treatment in a week or so. We
are all praying that she will get through treatment without complications. Heartworm treatment is serious and can lead to life-threatening
conditions. Christy has gained sufficient weight to undergo heartworm treatment, however, the fact that her heartworms are so severe and her
treatment had to be postponed due to her starvation and neglect makes her a high-risk case. If Christy does not undergo heartworm treatment,
she will die. It is extremely important that pet owners give their dogs monthly heartworm preventative obtained from their vet so that they will not
face the risk that Christy now faces. Also, most heartworm preventatives contain medications to prevent most of the intestinal parasites that
complicated Christy's condition. Heartworm treatment is available in a pill or treat form that dogs readily accept.
Note: Christy will be able to go into an adoptive home within a few weeks. Her adoptive family will be responsible for bringing her to her followup
appointments for heartworm treatment, at no cost to them. Christy has been posted on our website as available for adoption, so that her forever
family can find her now. PAS will be available to Christy's family for guidance throughout her treatment. For more information, or to inquire about
adopting Christy, please contact us at homes4pets@cox.net
November 4, 2006 -                                                    Christy found a home!!!!!
Christy was adopted at today's adoption event. She will have an adjustment period to go through for the next couple of weeks. We are all praying
that everything works out well and are hoping for the best. Yeah!!!!
