Gabrielle, 8, and Karley, 5, are the daughters of Sherry and
Jay Holmes. Both sisters are actively involved with their
parents and grandparents in animal rescue. They have been
raised with pets and show a remarkable compassion for all
animals. They share the daily responsibility of caring for the
5 family dogs and 1 cat, all rescues. (They are not afraid to
do the "dirty work!").
For her birthday in early 2006, Gabrielle asked for a puppy.
In keeping with her special concern for rescued animals, she
visited a local adoption event with her grandmother and
chose, Haley, a victim of Hurricane Katrina.
Karley's dog, Baby Nikki, a 10 yr old fox terrier, was rescued
in 2004 as a neglect case. Nikki was being fostered by the
family, but it was soon obvious that Karley would not part with
Baby Nikki, nor would the pint-sized senior citizen part with
Karley! The two were inseparable and still are.
Gabrielle has taken part in dog obedience classes
conducted with PAS foster dogs to increase their
adoptability. She truly has a gift with animals and has at
times been able to put dogs at ease during the training
classes to an extent that has impressed even adults
participating in the classes.
In 2004, at age 6, Gabrielle placed as first runner up in her
age division (6-9 yrs) in the American Humane Association's
"Be Kind to Animals" Kid's Contest.
